Abstract

The lance consists of a pipe coated externally, at least on the portion which is immersed, with a refractory; and the ring shaped outlet end of the lance or its outlet nozzle has a wall thickness (t) which is substantially less than that used in conventional lances. Th end of the lance or its nozzle pref. has a conical portion on its outer wall with a cone angle at least equal to the cone angle inside the end of the lance or nozzle so the thickness (t) reduces towards the outlet; dimension (t), in direct contact with the molten metal, is pref. max. 5mm and is esp. ca. 3mm. The lance carries a gas which possibly contains powders; and the thin end (t) reduces heat flow to the lance end, thereby increasing the working life of the lancE.
