Abstract

The window unit to operate the smoke vents fitted into the roof of a building, has a cranked handle (12) operating a drum through a suitable ratchet and pawl mechanism (8, 9), the cable being wound on or off to open or close the vent for ventilation purposes. If its becomes necessary for the vent to be opened rapidly by its integral operating gear, a glass panel (17) in the front of the window housing (18) is smashed. This releases a spring loaded flap (13, 14), a plunger (11) releasing the cable drum from the winder gear. A heat fuse can be used for the same purpose.
