Abstract

the pump of a washing machine or dishwasher has an impeller (10) driven by an electric motor (2). Water enters by the inlet (8) and flows into the impeller chamber (5) and is expelled through the delivery pipe (9). When the flow of water to the inlet ceases, air is drawn in. The presence of air reduces the delivery pressure of the impeller so that the column of water in the delivery pipe flows back into the pump causing an oscillating or surging flow which creates undesirable noise. This surging can be eliminated by connecting the inlet (5) to the impeller chamber (6) to a point (12) upstream on the delivery pipe (9) by a by-pass pipe (11). This allows the water to circulate in a closed circuit when the flow from the machine to the pump ceases.
