Abstract

The side valve engine has a piston (10) in a cylinder (11') with a cylinder head (11). It has an inlet valve (12) at the side of the piston opening into a turbulence chamber (21) in the cylinder head. The height of the turbulence chamber is less than its diameter and it is connected to the cylinder by a passage (26) in the head. At top dead centre, the top of the piston is level with the top of the cylinder and all the gases are in the connecting passage and turbulence chamber. The connecting passage is tangential to the turbulence chamber which is arc shaped, with its centre on the axis of the cylinder. This produces a turbulent motion which increases combustion efficiency.
