Abstract

A pump or compressor has a cylindrical chamber (44) housing a bladed rotor (26, 27, 28), and has a device to introduce a ferromagnetic liquid into the chamber, to induce a field into the chamber to form a rotating ring to drive the rotor. The rotor can be eccentrically mounted, or the chamber may be lobe shaped. In one design, the rotor has a solid core with one end supported by two sets of ball bearings spaced apart. The inlet and outlet ports are positioned at the other end. In a further design, the chamber is circular and rotates.
