Abstract

1,161,950. Liquid ring pumps. GAS COUNCIL. March 4, 1968 [March 4, 1967], No.10327/67. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H2] A liquid ring pump has a casing 3 with a ceramic lining 16 enclosing an eccentrically mounted rotor 11 which is driven by rotation of ring 26 of liquid metal so that fluid entering the spaces between the longitudinal ribs 14 is compressed. The ring of liquid metal is rotated by electromagnetic induction from coils 23, 24, 25 energized by a 3 phase supply. Alternatively a conduction effect may be used by providing electrodes in the liner and tungsten plating on the rotor to pass a radial current through the liquid metal which interacts with a longitudinal magnetic field to produce rotation of the metal. The rotor is made of ceramic material and is mounted in bearings in ceramic end plates (1,2) centred at 18, and the depth of liquid metal, preferably tin or sodium, is such that at one point ribs 15 are entirely submerged. In a modification Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), one endplate is provided with both inlet and outlet ports which are connected to the respective pumping spaces through passages in the interior of the rotor.
