Abstract
A flexible strip seal profile having a smooth skin around a hollow foam core is made by coextrusion of the skin and foam materials under conditions which extrude a profile of reduced cross-section with a thick skin. Further expansion of the foam is allowed to dilate the cross-section and draw down the skin to its final thickness, before the profile passes through a vulcanisation chamber. The vulcanisation chamber may be an air oven, a microwave oven or a fluidised bed. The skin and foam are made of different but compatible materials such as ethylene-, propylene-diene or styrene butadiene rubbers, or neoprene (polychloroprene), nitrile (acrylonitrile) or natural rubber. The continuous profile is more versatile than profiles made by moulding processes. The process is more reliable than coextrusion of very thin skins on a full-sized profile.
