Abstract

The two pipes (10) and (11) have flat flanges (12) and (13) welded onto the end of each pipe. Each flanges has a cylindrical outer diameter and a flat back face. The flanges abut onto a gasket ring (14) which extends beyond the outer diameter of the flange. Each flange is filled with a backing ring (17 and 18). The backing rings are stepped so that the centre of the ring will rest onto the back of the flange, and the outer edges of the two rings are closer together. Three bolts (23) and nuts pull the backing rings together.
