Abstract
A reservoir (1) contains a liquid (2) with a high co-efficient of thermal expansion, such as alcohol. The reservoir (1) is built from a large number of tubes in order to increase the surface area exposed to the source of heat or cold. A spherical container (4) with a central diaphragm separates the alcohol from the hydraulic fluid which acts in the piston of the jack (5). The piston rod is connected to two parallel toothed racks which drive the two pinions (6). These pinions are attached to the input shaft of the gear box (7) with an output shaft (8). The pinions (6) are provided with free wheels operating in oppositve directions so that the output shaft (8) rotates in the same way whether the liquid is expanding due to heating or contracting due to cooling.
