[Also in Group XXVII] An hydraulic coupling comprises a stationary housing c which supports a pump a having coaxial input and output shafts g, k and has a passage p interconnecting the inlet and outlet of the pump, and an adjustable valve q in the passage actuated by temperature-responsive means u to control the rate of circulation of liquid through the pump. The pump consists of gears i<SP>1</SP>, i<SP>2</SP>, i<SP>3</SP> secured to spindles ml, m<SP>2</SP>, m<SP>3</SP> carried in sleeves n<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>2</SP>, n<SP>3</SP> having small axial movement in bores in the pump body, the gear il being secured to the output shaft k; additional gears may be arranged in engagement with the gear i<SP>1</SP>. The passage p connected to the inlet and outlet of the pump contains a slidable valve q urged by a spring s against the temperature-responsive means u in a chamber t; the means u may be a capsule of wax or other substance which will expand under the action of heat. The coupling may be employed to drive the fan of the cooling system of an internalcombustion engine, the liquid in the system being connected by pipes to the chamber t. When the liquid is cool, the valve is positioned to permit circulation of liquid through the pump so that the shaft k driving the fan is stationary or rotates only slowly. As the temperature of the liquid rises, the expansion of the capsule u moves the valve q against the spring to restrict the circulation so that liquid pressure in the pump rotates the shaft k and fan. The body a of the pump is formed with a portion e which extends into a chamber f in the housing c supplied with liquid pressure from the pump to urge the body a against the end wall d of the housing. Liquid pressure also acts on the ends of the sleeves n<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>2</SP>, n<SP>3</SP> to urge the end faces of the gears against the end wall d. The pump is replenished' with liquid from a chamber w.
