Abstract

The contrictor is used for flow limiting in pipe line systems. There is a measuring instrument (12) before the main tap (14). Passing fluid spins the wheel (32), moving a cam (36) coupled to a wheel (42) and rack (46). Pinion movement drives a lever (24) against spring bias (30) to open the bypass valve (22). The pressure release valve (26) remains closed however. Pressure builds up in the bypass line (16) and gradually moves the piston (20) which closes the main tap (14). The flow limiter is reset when flow begins again. When a predetermined time has elapsed after reset, or after a preselected mass or volume of liquid has passed the measuring instrument (12) after the commencement of fluid flow through the system, the main tap (14) mounted within the pipeline is closed to prevent further flow.
