Abstract

618,523. Valves actuated indirectly. K.A.C., Ltd., and HENDERSON, W. P. June 5, 1946, No. 17129. [Class 135] A fluid flow system incorporates a detachable member normally forming part of the flow passage but which, on removal from the system operates a device to seal off the two free ends of the system and which, on re-insertion into the system, reverses the device to permit the fluid to flow again. In an embodiment, the detachable member 3, Fig. 1, holds a filter 20, and when the member 3 is in position, liquid flows from the pipe 1, through a rotary plug valve 4 and through apertures in a plate 9, into the member 3, through the filter, and out through the valve 4 to the outlet pipe 1A. The plate 9 is secured to the member 3 by pins 8 and it carries a projection 12 adapted to engage, in succession, two pivoted, spring-loaded, pawls 13, 13<1>, Fig. 3, carried by the valve 4. As the member 3 is unscrewed to detach it, projection 12 engages pawl 13, but as the latter cannot rotate due to its abutment against a fixed track 16, the valve 4 is forced round to the closed position. When this is reached, pawl 13 will have reached a gap 21 in the track where it can swing round and allow the projection. 12 to pass. When the member 3 is re-attached, pawl 13<1> will be operated in a similar manner to open valve 4. The latter is provided with a cover plate 17 running on balls 18 and held in definite positions by a ball detent 19. In a modification, the projection 12 is omitted and a ring with a cut-out portion actuates the pawls. The ring is urged upwards by a spring.
