Abstract
The transit-time mass spectrometer has a high resolution small transverse dimensions and does not require the ion source and detector to be close together for easy access to the source and to the deflection system. The ion detector (7) and an ion reflector are located on opposite sides of the ion source (3). For this purpose all the ion source electrodes are transparent to the ions (4). The ion source contains two electrodes (5, 6) that form the vertical walls of the ionisation chamber. The ion source has two further electrodes (11, 13) outside the first two and parallel to them. The ion reflector consists of three electrodes, two being transparent (12, 16) and one being reflecting (10).
