Abstract

A neutron generator has a gastight envelope and a gas store together with an electrode assembly for ionising the gas from the store. There is a permanent magnet, a target electrode positioned some distance from the gas store, the electrode and the magnet. In addition there is an accelerator for bringing the ionised gas into a collision with the target. The permanent magnet is a hollow cylinder within the envelope. The electrode assembly is formed from this cylinder with an electrode at each end; the cylinder and the electrodes having opposing polarity. System is such more compact than other neutron generators and can be used down normally-sized boreholes.
