Abstract
Aluminium alloy made by evapn. and condensn. contains by wt. 2-12% Cr, 0.2-3.0% Fe, balance Al and trace elements, the major part of the Cr being in metastable soln. in the Al lattice which contains a pptd. iron-rich phase with max. size 200 angstrom, the amt. of coarse intermetallic particles, esp. at the grain boundaries, being reduced to the minimum. The alloy pref. contains 4-10, esp. 5-9% Cr and 0.3-2.0, esp. 0.6-1.5% Fe; and esp. pref. compsn. is 5-8% Cr, 0.8-1.3% Fe where the iron-rich phase has max. size 50 angstrom. The metastable soln. of Cr pref. consists of narrow, elongated grains or platelets with max. dia. or thickness 5 mu m, esp. 1 mu m. The alloy is used e.g. in aviation, the alloy possessing high creep- and fatigue-resistance.
