Abstract
Thick-walled steel parts with rotational symmetry, esp. pressure vessels, are made by using deposition welding to build up the wall, where several consumable electrodes travel vertically upwards to form a wall with a desired profile. The novelty is the use of a radial row of electrodes which deposit several circular seams, each set of a seams formed by one electrode forming one wall zone, each electrode moves in a radial direction to deposit a row of seams. The wall zones can be made of materials with different mechanical properties and/or different corrosion resistance, and/or different resistance to H2. In the pref. plant, a turntable is used to rotate a cylinder being built up below a row of electrodes. Used for example the mfr. of pressure vessels and rings for nuclear reactors with dias. over 10 metres so the vessels etc. are too large for forging, and can be built on site to avoid transport problems.
