Abstract

1334196 Metallic fabrics EUROPEAN ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY 27 Jan 1972 [18 Feb 1971] 3890/72 Heading D1K [Also in Divisions E1 F2 and G6] Thermal insulation particularly suitable for the lining of concrete walls, e.g. of nuclear reactor pressure vessels, comprises several strata 5 of highly porous metal wire mesh and thin metal sheets 6 disposed in alternate sequence. Each stratum 5 consists of a plurality of superjacent metal fabric layers, e.g. layers 7, 8, 9 and 10, each provided with an undulating structure proceeding along lines 14, the direction of which forms an angle of 45‹ with the principal knitting direction. The undulating structures in directly superjacent layers are perpendicular to each other so that such layers are in contact only at points, the overall porosity of the resulting stratum 5 being in excess of 95%. A retaining plate 11 is placed over the outermost stratum 5 and joined to the insulation by means of hollow bolts 12 welded to a steel skin 2 which lines the wall being insulated. The wire mesh may comprise Ni-Cu alloy wire, and the metal sheets 6 and retaining plate 11 may be formed of stainless steel.
