Abstract

1416194 Gas/liquid/solid contact SCHERING AG 17 Nov 1972 [22 Nov 1971 (2)] 53247/72 Heading B1F Gas/liquid upward flow co-current contact is effected in a reactor comprising a number of horizontal perforated plates which divide the reactor into a number of sections, the ratio of the total perforation area of each plate to the reactor cross-section in the vicinity of that plate being at most 15%, each perforation in each perforated plate being the same size as the other perforations in that plate, each perforation having a cylindrical or bevelled inlet or being frustoconical in shape with a wider inlet than outlet, the perforated plates being evenly spaced along the reactor and the distance between each pair of adjacent perforated plate is greater than three times the diameter of the reactor, and the rates of flow of liquid and gas are such that return of liquid and/or gas from one reactor section to the preceeding one is substantially prevented. A gas cushion may be formed below each perforated plate. Finely divided solid may be suspended in the liquid. The process may be used to produce organo-aluminium compounds by the Ziegler method, to produce tri-ethyl aluminium from di-ethyl-aluminium hydride and ethylene, to produce di-ethyl-aluminium hydride from aluminium and triethyl aluminium, and in the polymerisation of oleic acid, linoleic acid, and linolenic acid.
