Abstract
1374149 Electroslag refining apparatus BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOOIATION 23 March 1973 [24 March 1972] 13885/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] An electroslag refining apparatus comprises a mould 1, an electrode 6, means for introducing a gas into the mould, and a tubular, longitudinally-corrugated flexible member 11 mounted on, but insulated from, the mould and surrounding the electrode. The member 11 may be made of copper, steel, plastics or ceramic material and in its contracted state has a diameter less than that of the eleotiode 6 so that when the electrode is surrounded by the said member the spices of the corrugations bear against the surface of the electrode. Helical springs may be positioned about the outer surface of the member 11 to urge it into contact with the electrode. In operation;an inert or reactive gas, e.g. a sulphurcontaining gas, is conveyed to andfrom the mould through pipes 5 and the electrode 6 lowered at a controlled rate by the carriage 13 to maintain a predetermined gap between the electrode tip and the surface of the metal pool 19. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), three rectangular electrodes are melted down simultaneously, each electrode being surrounded by a flexible corrugated member seated on a plate (25) mounted on the top of the mould.
