Abstract

An abrasion resistance of steel surfaces is increased by (a) forming a mixt. contg. 20-80 g MoS2 and 1-5g H2SO4 per litre of glycerol, (b) heating the mixt. to 190-230 degrees C, and immersing the steel in the mixt. for 3-7 hrs. in the presence of brass. The process is esp. useful for treating the working surfaces of stamping and punching tools made of heat-resisting steel, e.g. for the prodn. of abrasive products. The brass acts as a catalyst for the decompsn. of the MoS2 and thus accelerates the formation of the abrasion-resistant film. The steel part to be treated is pref. placed in a brass gauze basket and this immersed in the coating mixt.
