Abstract

The method measures the degree of transparency of a part of a liquid medium (12). A light pipe (41) conveys light to the heart of the medium and the light which passes through is received via a mirror (58) and measured by a photocell (56). A second light pipe (42) receives the transmitted light. The liquid medium may be agitated during the measurement by the light pipe supports. Fibre optics may be used as light pipes. The main application is to hematology for determination of blood plasma properties. In conventional systems the transparency of the walls of the sample tube affects the result, but this is avoided by fibre optics.
