Abstract

The application of magnesium-aluminium pressure die casting alloys to the prodn. of pressure die castings which are susceptible to the formation of hot tears, due to the shape of the casting and its mfg. process, where the alloys contain 3-10% Al, 4% max. Zn, 0.5% max each of Mn, Si, Cu and with 0.005-0.4% calcium and/or sodium, the remainder being magnesium. The pref. alloy contains 3-10% Al, 4% max Zn, 0.5% max. each of Mn, Si, Cu but with 0.01-0.2% calcium and/or sodium, the remainder being magnesium. A marked redn. in the incidence of hot tears is achieved.
