Abstract

High purity (>99%) tin is gravity cast in a perfectly polished and machined (not moulded) metal mould, the metal of which has a very low thermal expansion coefft. and a very low rate of oxidn. at high temp. Mould compsn. is pref. 0.5% Fe, 0.5-8% Si, 3.5-4.5% Cu, 0.1% Zn 0.5-1.0% Mg, 0.3-0.8% Mn, 0.2% Ti, bal. Al. Casting is effected at 350-370 degrees C in the mould preheated to 250-270 degrees C, the mold having a prior protection coating.
