Abstract

The rotating shaft seal assembly separates two areas of different air pressures. A seal ring (14) has equally spaced axial holes (30) which are interconnected by an axial groove (32) on the low pressure side (P2). A fixed ring (16) with a small radial gap at the seal housing (10) restricts the air flow to the low pressure area. The seal ring (14) is able to float axially within the limits allowed by the location element (26). When pressure variations occur, the resulting axial movement of seal ring (14) is such that the designed air escape flow is maintained. A self balancing rotating air seal is thus obtained.
