Abstract

H2O-soluble or H2O-dispersible hot melt adhesives comprise (a) a grade of PVA contg. 30-60 mol. % residual acetate gps. prepd. by alkaline hydrolysis of P.V. acetate of average degree of polymerisation (p) about 60-200 in soln. in 1x-2x the stoichiometric amt. of absolute MeOH required for the necessary 40-70 mol. % hydrolysis; (b) >=1 plasticisers in an amot. (0.08p-10) to (0.08p+25) wt. % based on (a) and more than zero; and (c) 0-50 wt. % C2H4/Vi acetate copolymer also based on (a). Pref. process of alkaline hydrolysis led previously to grades of PVA having high mp.pt. high melt viscosity and low heat stability so that foaming occurred on melting. Addn. of palsticisers reduced on m.pt. but also rendered adhesive strength inadequate. These problems are overcome by the invention. The adhesives are used for book binding, corrugated board and cartons.
