Abstract

1461933 Hot melt adhesive compositions SWIFT & CO 4 Feb 1974 [5 Feb 1973] 05090/74 Heading C3P Thermostable, thermoplastic, hot melt adhesive compositions comprise (a) 15 to 45 weight per cent of an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer containing 60 to 72 weight per cent of ethylene and 28 to 40 weight per cent of vinyl acetate and having a melt index of 22 to 168, (b) 15 to 26 weight per cent of a microcrystalline or synthetic wax having a melting point in excess of 180‹ F., (c) 6 to 15 weight per cent of a polyethylene having a substantially linear structure and a molecular weight of 1000 to 3500, (d) 30 to 55 weight per cent of a halogen-free tackifying resin which is a rosin, modified rosin or polyterpene resin, and (e) an effective amount of an antioxidant to stabilize the adhesive, said adhesive having a melt viscosity of 5 to 35 poises at 350‹ F. The synthetic wax may be a high molecular weight polyethylene. Preferred tackifiers are polyterpene resins, rosin esters and hydrogenated rosin esters.
