Abstract
A steam engine heats air used in the cylinder using exhaust steam, thus obtaining air at a very high temperature in the cylinder compression chamber. When piston(53) of engine(52) sucks in air, inlet valve (54) opens, allowing air from inlet pipe(55) to enter cylinder(62). The exhaust steam pipe(56) is situated inside air inlet pipe(55) over a large part of its length. In order to transfer the maximum of heat to the inlet air, exhaust pipe(56) has metal fins or baffles(5). Since the temperature of the steam could be very high, a fairly low compression ratio could be tolerated. The exhaust steam is led into a tank(58) containing water which is thus heated. This can be an auxiliary tank or the engine main water supply.
