Abstract

A heater unit (16) is fitted between the fuel distributor pressure pump and the injector (11) which in the case of indirect fuel injection is fitted to the air intake pipe immediately in front of the inlet valve (13). The heating takes place electrically (18) until the engine reaches working temperature when it is then switched over to exhaust gas heat exchange (17). The fuel is heated to a temperature of approximately 220 deg.C and is still in a liquid condition when it reaches the injector (11). On leaving the injector at a pressure of 115 or more atmospheres, the fuel completely vapourises so that a more complete combustion is afforded with a consequently reduced toxis exhaust emission.
