Abstract

A shaft seal (8) is made up of a conventional O-ring (2) to which an external radial flange (1) is attached. One axial face of the flange (1) forms a radial tangent with the O-ring part of the seal. The best results are obtained when the axial thickness of the flange (2) is 1/3 to 1/6 of the O-ring cross sectional diameter. Typical sizes of the parts can be 1.5 mm thickness for the flange and 5 mm dia for the ring section. The seal is of an elastomo or synthetic rubber and can have an additional axially extending flange around the part which seats in the housing.
