Abstract

In the high-temp. pyrolysis of hydrocarbon feeds to produce unsatd. aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbons, the necessary heat is supplied by a heating medium comprising a mixt. of steam and H2 at >=1300 degrees C used in an amt. such that the temp. of the effluent leaving the pyrolysis zone is >=800 degrees C. The process can be used to produce ethylene, acetylene, and aromatics from feeds ranging from natural gas to crude oil. Addn. of H2 to the heating medium suppresses CO formation.
