A method of making a gas interchangeable with natural gas comprises subjecting a feed gas containing hydrogen and saturated gaseous and/or evaporated liquid hydrocarbons having an upper boiling point not exceeding 180‹ C. to hydrocracking in the presence of a highly active hydrogenation catalyst at a temperature in the range 200‹ to 470‹ C. and at a space velocity of 500 to 10,000 Nm<SP>3</SP> per cubic metre of catalyst per hour. The relative proportions of hydrogen and hydrocarbon in the feed gas are adjusted so that the ratio pC n H m to pH 2 <SP>m</SP>/<SP>3</SP>, where pC n H m and pH 2 are the partial pressures of each hydrocarbon and of hydrogen in the final gas respectively, is greater than the thermodynamic equilibrium constant for all temperatures in the reaction zone. Soot formation is stated not to occur, and the final gas is rich in methane and may contain up to 20% C 2 to C 4 hydrocarbons. Butane and propane contents should be low to facilitate transmission through pipe lines without precipitation of condensate. Five specific examples are described in which the feed gas consists of coke oven gas with butane, liquefied petroleum gas, ethane and naphtha as the added hydrocarbon.
