Abstract

A stopping system for a vessel such as a cargo boat employs a flap (4) or flaps normally flush with the side of the hull under the water line. The flaps can be pivoted outwards about vertical hinges (5a) to produce a braking effect. When closed each flap forms a seal over a compartment (7) housing a hydraulic cylinder (6) which can push the flap open, or pull it shut when required. The cylinders (6) can be operated separately, and the flaps can be thus operated to have a steering effect. Flaps could be operated to open forwards against the flow of water past the hull, but this application is limited owing to the high stresses present.
