Abstract
The battery driven DC transmission has a constant current pole supply for speeds up to a set level, after which any increase in speed is obtained by reducing the field current. This eliminates any high current control circuits which are usually required in conventional designs to vary the pole current. Speed control from starting to the set speed is obtained by a variable hydraulic torque converter. At the set speed the torque converter is bypassed by a hydraulically controlled mechanical clutch. This eliminates transmission losses in the torque converter when it is not being used. The control of the clutch and the torque converter is via a hydraulic pump with the clutch engaged when the pump output is zero, so that the pump can be disconnected at the higher speeds, thus saving power.
