Abstract

1290678 Electric traction motor ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 26 Oct 1970 [4 Aug 1969] 38927/69 Heading B7H An electric traction motor 10 of a vehicle is coupled to an impeller of a torque inverter 21 which via a fluid drives a turbine on an output drive shaft connected to the driving wheels 22. A stator is mounted on a free wheel between the impeller and turbine. When a speed differential exists between the impeller and turbine, the stator is locked on its free wheel to provide torque multiplication. The torque ratio drops as the turbine speed increases and reaches 1 : 1 when the turbine speed is approximately 90% of the impeller speed at which point the stator will free wheel. Preferably two field windings 11, 12 can be switched alternately into series (for full field, low speed operation) or parallel (for weak field, increased speed) with the motor 10. In addition the battery may be divided into two equal parts which can be connected in series or parallel by contactors (not shown). A control 20 has a foot control movable through three intermediate positions to a final position so that a smooth sequence of operation in order of increasing speed is achieved. In the first position the battery halves are in parallel connection and the field windings 11, 12 are switched from series to parallel connection, the battery halves are then switched to series and the windings again switched again from series to parallel connection corresponding to the fully depressed condition of the foot control.
