Abstract

Marking articles made of synthetic resins, esp. polyethylene, by drilling patterns of holes in the surface of the articles and subsequently modifying the appearance of some of the holes to create a semi-permanent distinctive mark. For providing means for identifying tote boxes or similar items, where the marks can be introduced either at the time of manufacture or after purchase of the article. A matrix of holes is more permanent than use of surface paint or labels, is more adaptable than use of mould inserts bearing label characters. Use of multi-head drills is simpler and safer than use of surface treatment flames or corona discharge equipment. Esp. effective for marking mouldings made of materials which are difficult to print.
