Abstract
A rigid acoustic coupling is made between an electro-mechanical converter and the test piece by continuous pressure. The converter and the test piece are made to vibrate in common and the material for testing is irradiated with ultrasonic test signals. In the course of the test the rate of change of the test signal amplitude is monitored. When the amplitude drops abruptly, vibration is suspended and the test signal parameters which appear as data carriers for the test case are measured. The parameters of the test signal are measured, not immediately after vibration has ceased, but after an interval long enough to allow the residual stresses on the converter, caused by vibration and pressure, to disappear.
