Abstract

1445410 Acoustic detection of gas bubbles in liquid B BRAUN MELSUNGEN AG and F B VERACCHI 15 Aug 1973 [17 Aug 1972] 38507/73 Headings H4D and H4J The amount of free gas in blood contained in a hollow body is determined by measuring the attenuation of a sub-audio frequency (e.g. less than 10 Hz) acoustic signal transmitted through the blood. Figs. 1 and 2, show the application of the method to detecting bubbles in blood passing through the bubble-collector 1 of a haemodialyser. The collector is supported by a housing 4 having a hinged lid. The transmitting and receiving transducers 7, 8 each comprise an aluminium body 9 shaped to conform to the collector surface, and a piezoelectric element 10. The trandsucers are held in place by springs and are embedded in soft polyurethane 11. Transducer 7 is energized by a phase and amplitude modulated pulse. The signal received by transducer 7 is adjustably amplified then converted to digital form for processing in a logic circuit. The logic circuit operation is synchronized with the transmitted signal to suppress spurious signals.
