Abstract

The removal of NH3 from ammoniacal vapours obtd. by steam stripping of NH3 absorption solns. (esp. those used in coke-oven gas purificn.) is carried out by (a) subjecting the vapours to partial combustion at 950-1150 degrees C with a substoichiometric amt. of O2 and then (b) subjecting the prod. to total combustion with excess O2 at 950-1050 degrees C, the optimum temp. in stage (b) being adjusted by recycle of effluent gas and the sensible heat of the combustion gases being utilised to generate steam. The process minimises the NOx content of the effluent gas emitted into the atmosphere; the NOx content is only about 30% of that in effluent gases produced by simple combustion with excess O2. In stage (a) the vapours are pref. burnt together with added fuel (e.g. coke-oven gas). The amts. of O2 used are pref. 90-99.9% of the stoichiometric amt. in stage (a) and 100.1-110% of the stoichiometric amt. in stage (b). The recycled effluent gas is pref. divided into several streams, which are introduced at different points into the combustion chamber.
