Abstract

Waste combustion gases contg. NOx are treated in a two-stage process. The gas is mixed at 700-1300 degrees C with O2 and NH3 in the absence of H2, or in the presence of less than 10 moles H2 per mole NH3. The mole ratio H2:NH3 is adjusted to more than 3:1 and the gas mixt. is exposed to a temp. of 490-700 degrees C. The H2 is pref. obtd. by cracking NH3; and in stage (a), the gas mixt. pref. contains 0.1-10 vol.% O2 and 0.6-10 moles NH3 per mole of NOx. In stage (b), the temp. is pref. 550-680 degrees C and the mole ratio H2:NH3 is pref. above 5:1. Used for removing NOx from waste gases obtd. e.g. from boilers burning various fuel oils or coal; or from exhaust gas from integral combustion engines. The NOx causes environmental pollution and smog.
