Abstract
1467123 Gasification of hydrocarbons INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE 3 March 1975 [8 March 1974] 8711/75 Heading C5E [Also in Division F4] A process of converting hydrocarbons (e.g. heavy hydrocarbons) into a gas containing H 2 and CO by incomplete combustion in a combustion chamber comprises: conveying an oxygencontaining gas at supersonic speed; effecting recompression of the gas to slow it to subsonic speed with the formation of a shockwave; introducing the hydrocarbon into the gas upstream of the shockwave whereby the hydrocarbon is atomized by the shockwave; and exhausting the resultant gas containing H 2 and CO. The oxygen-containing gas and/or the hydrocarbon are preferably preheated, and the combustion chamber may be heated by a first stage of comprising complete combustion followed by a second stage of the incomplete combustion. Soot formed in the second stage may be trapped by refractory granules in the combustion chamber, and burnt off in a subsequent second stage. Two combustion chambers may alternatively feed a single outlet for gas.
