Abstract

The outer ball race of the bearing on the side away from the working end of the spindle has a cylindrical extension. An externally adjustable axial hydraulic force is added to the axial force exerted by springs located in axial boreholes arranged around the circumference of the extension. Variation of the clamping action is attained by varying the axial position of a stop ring when varying the initial position of the springs. This stop ring is formed from a flange bushing set into the bearing mounting. The axial extension slides on the weaker cross section of the bushing whereby the intermediary annular space then formed is coupled to a line maintained under fluid pressure.
