A portable machine adapted to be mounted on a pipe for profiling the end thereof or for facing a flange thereon comprises a tubular shaft 18 rotatably mounted in a casing and driven through gearing 15, 12, 17, a tool carrier outside the casing and driven by the shaft 18, a mandrel 28 extending within and out from the shaft 18 and a draw spindle 36 within the mandrel, axial movement of the spindle causing radial expansion of means on the mandrel adapted to grip the bore of a pipe 30; the casing together with the tool carrier can be displaced axially relative to the mandrel to set the tool against the pipe end. Axial displacement of the casing is effected by manual rotation of a handle 26 on a boss 25 which is in threaded engagement with one end of the mandrel. Operation of the draw spindle 36 to effect clamping is by manual rotation of a handle 41 on a sleeve 39 threaded to the end of the spindle. The tool carrier comprises a plate 20a which carries a guide 20 and slide 21 the latter having a tool support 22, radial adjustment of the tool being effected by a screw member 20b. Pawl and ratchet means, not shown, may provide incremental feed of the tool during cutting. The clamping means on the mandrel may comprise, as shown pairs of dished washers 32, 33 spaced by spacers 31 axial compression by the draw spindle serving to expand the washers into engagement with the pipe bore. Alternatively (Fig. 4, not shown) an expansible rubber sleeve may be used or clamping shoes which are forced radially by the action of pairs of wedge members drawn together by the spindle. An air motor 16 is mounted on the casing for drive of the tool carrier.
