Abstract

When the engine is started fuel is delivered by the pumps (7) and (8) to the fuel accumulator (65). Fuel flows from the accumulator (65) to the release valve (66) in which springs keep the piston (67) over the hole (70). The lower end of the release valve (66) is attached to the wall of the cylinder (2) and holes (35) and (37) communicate with the cylinder interior. When the piston (4) passes the hole (37) the pressure on the upper surface of the lower piston is reduced to the level of the pressure in the space (3) behind the piston (4). The higher pressure in the space (2) raises the piston (67), opening the hole (70) so that fuel flows to the injector (71).
