Abstract

A cooling bed for round bars consisting of a transfer device for moving the bars from an inlet track onto the cooling bed; a cooling bed with mobile rakes for the transverse movement of the bars being cooled; and a bar removal device at the outlet end of the bed. The bed comprises stationary beams with a flat upper surface parallel to the mobile rakes, and means to actuate the rakes so that the bars are rolled and advanced along the top of the fixed beams. The rakes pref. consist of two sets, one set being staggered by half a step w.r.t. the other with synchronised raising and lowering so the bars roll evenly across the bed. The bed is used in conjunction with a hot rolling mill or continuous casting plant, and ensures uniform cooling which not only avoids distortion but straightens the bars during travel across the bed. The beams and rakes are 90 degrees w.r.t. the inlet track so the bars have a continuously changing point of contract with the bed i.e. no indentations are formed in the hot surface of the bar.
