Abstract

A portal frame comprises three site connected elements, i.e. twin posts (10) and an overhead cross beam (11), all of U-cross section and joined by separate top plate tenons (20) which engage slots (26) in the cross beam. Plane tenons align vertically normal to the major door plane and slide into open topped envelopes (16) provided at the post tops. The envelopes are on the top and bottom of each post so the posts are interchangeable. The U-section fits over wall ends in the door opening, being fixed by nails or screws through the leg walls (13). Clip-on shallow inverted U section members with mitred slidably adjustable angles are utilised to mask nail heads.
