Abstract

Tool allows a tubular body to be spun by an internal or external rotary sleeve mandrel while a non-rotating plunger passing coaxially through the sleeve clamps a cap against an external plunger supporting the underside of the cap. Esp. suitable for welding thin wall components made of flexible materials, e.g. battery cases. Positive clamping of the cap between opposing tools can provide a higher level of grip than use of circumferential jaws or a longitudinal thrust by the rotating tubular body. Design is robust and suitable for high speed spinning with brief welding and ejection cycles, e.g. 2 seconds.
