Abstract

Insulation materials are made by mixing expanded mineral particles. Mineral particles are of sxhiste or clay or glass beads expanded to relative density of 1.1, pref. 0.2-1.0. Mineral particles may be precoated with a binder resin compatible with the expandable plastic beads, may be preheated to act as the heat source for expanding the expandable beads when mixed therewith. The insulation matls are useful for mfr. of coherent insulation boards or mouldings, for e.g. roof or wall linings, boat hull insulation etc. Composite insulation offers better fire resistance, mechanical strength and dimensional stability than organic insulation, plus a reduced coefficient of thermal expansion, less sensitivity to heat or humidity, lower cost.
