Abstract

The machine has a single inlet connection for a supply of pressurised fluid, pref. compressed air, which is distributed to individual jacking cylinders to actuate various machine motions, i.e. (a) a first cylinder which actuates a pair of jaws to grip a skin to be staked; (b) a second cylinder which can be controlled to move the jaws, and hence the skin, relative to a rotating cutter; and (c) a third cylinder which is mechanicallylinked to a hinged pressure panel adapted to press an area of the skin against the staking cutter. Not only does the fluid power actuation reduce operator fatigue and raise output, but the individual actuating cylinders facilitates control of the process to give results equal to manual staking for different thicknesses and textures of skin.
