Abstract

The outer conductor joint is formed by removing the insulating sleeve from around the cable ends to expose the opposing outer conductors, winding a metal tape over the gap between outer conductors and soldering its ends to both outer conductors. A short insulating tube with a split along its length is then closed over the joint with its ends sliding beneath the ends of the cable insulating sleeves. The joint is then placed in a suitable press and the longitudinal sides of the split and the sleeves and tube ends are fused together to give a flush surface.
