Abstract

Films made of asbestos in a binder resin and used for increasing the fire resistance of other materials, either as a surface covering or subsurface layer. Films should be 0.20-0.30 mm thick, pref. impregnated with a thermosetting resin which is also adhesive, esp. a urea-formaldehyde resin. Esp. for improving the fire resistance ratings of panels of particle agglomerates used for e.g. partitions in buildings from e.g. "difficulty inflammable" to "non-inflammable" (test procedure not named). Thin films are not prone to shattering under thermal stress like thick asbestos sheets. The binder matrix can be hard enough for the film to be a protective surface with more wear or scratch resistance than plain asbestos boards.
